Short, Sweet, and Delighted

My younger daughter, apart from being totally edible in general, has a super-endearing habit of being utterly delighted when she learns a wacky new word. The other night she was chortling over the word warmth. “That’s not really a word, is it, Mama?” It just sounded strange to her. Equally silly to Sara was the fact that the name Jose (which we came across in a Junie B. Jones book she’s reading aloud to us) is pronounced “Ho-say,” because in Spanish, the”j” sound is “h.”

“Really??” she said, letting loose with her sweet little girl giggle.

What a gift to be there the first time someone becomes aware of a new word or idea. What a gift to get to hear that laugh!
